長年の歳月をかけて制作された本作は、現代における最も重要なバンドの一つであるジョイ・ディヴィジョンの記念碑的リリースです。観客によるカセット録音、サウンドボード・テープ、放送用音源などから丹念に収集された16公演分のライブ音源を14枚のCDにまとめ、すべてアビー・ロード・スタジオでマスタリングを施しています。

『Eternal (Live)』は、バンドのキャリアにおいて最も重要なライブ・パフォーマンスの数々を記録した作品です。「Hope & Anchor」や「Acklam Hall」といった未発表ライブ2公演に加え、「The Factory」、「Lyceum」、「Moonlight Club（4月2日公演）」という、これまで未公開だった音源3公演分も収録されています。さらに、1980年にバーミンガムのHigh Hallで行われたバンド最後のライブも収録されており、ここでは「Ceremony」がステージ上で最初で最後に演奏されました。

2枚のDVDには合計2時間半を超えるライブ映像を収録。これには、これまで未公開だったブリュッセル「Plan K」でのコンサート映像や、マンチェスターのApollo Theatreでのコンサート2公演とサウンドチェックの模様（これらは1982年にVHSで一部のみ公開されていました）に加え、マルコム・ホワイトヘッド監督による映像作品『Joy Division – A Malcolm Whitehead Film』の最新編集版が含まれます。

パッケージは12インチ・サイズの「リフトオフ・リッド（被せ蓋）」式ボックス仕様で、ウォーレン・ジャクソン、ピーター・サヴィル、ハワード・ウェイクフィールド、ブレット・ウィッケンズによるアートワークが施されています。表紙写真はヴォルフガング・ティルマンスの作品『Sirius Through a Defocused Telescope, 2023』が採用されています。

さらに、サイモン・アーミテージによる個人的な寄稿文や、アントン・コービijn（コービン）やケヴィン・カミンズらによる写真を掲載した16ページのブックレットも付属し、充実した内容となっています。
